Portland utilities top renewable charts

PacifiCorp has the second-largest number of renewable energy customers in the nation, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The Portland-based utility serves nearly 1.6 million customers in six states, 51,297 of which purchase renewable energy.

Portland General Electric (PGE) holds the No. 3 spot, while Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy leads the category with more than 63,000 customers participating in its renewable energy program.

For the second year in a row, PGE ranked No. 1 for the amount of renewable energy consumed by its customers. Residential customers purchased 3.4 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy in 2006, a 23 percent increase from 2005.

PGE also ranked high for its customer participation rate, which, at 6.5 percent, placed the utility in a tie with Montezuma Municipal Light & Power for the No. 3 slot.
